Image earns Palmyra woman a Delaware photo contest win

Palmyra resident Victoria Gordon’s photo of sunset on a kayak has earned her the grand prize in the seventh annual Southern Delaware Tourism photography contest.

Professional photographers Pam Aquilani and Tony Pratt served as judges for this year’s competition and cited the quality of entries. They judged the submitted photos on technical elements like proper exposure, focus and composition, as well as the overall story told by the image, according to a press release from Southern Delaware Tourism.

The contest was supported by tourism partners who contributed contest prizes, including The Inn at Canal Square in Lewes, Delaware; Four Acres Living; Brittingham Farms; and the Boardwalk Plaza Hotel.

Gordon’s photo included kayakers approaching Cape Henlopen’s Breakwater Lighthouse in Delaware.

“This photograph stood out, as it puts the viewer in the seat of the kayak and the kayak’s bow leads to the paddling companion in the distance,” one judge commented. “The smooth water evokes calm, and we as viewers can practically hear and smell the moment as well as we can see it.”

Gordon’s prize included two nights at The Inn at Canal Square in Lewes; a gift certificate for dinner at the Grain on the Rocks there; and a dolphin watching tour for two from Cape Water Tours & Taxi, also in Lewes.

Photo categories in the contest included southern Delaware boardwalk scenes and southern Delaware water sports.

Scott Thomas, executive director of Southern Delaware Tourism, said the competition was established to “celebrate southern Delaware and to keep our destination top of mind for visitors and potential visitors year round.”
