Officers promoted at Mantua committee meeting

Mantua police have a new lieutenant and sergeant

Two Mantua police officers were promoted at the township committee meeting on March 13 with resolutions for the government’s permanent record.

Brian Hauss was promoted to the rank of lieutenant and Brian Crispin to the rank of sergeant.

First up was Hauss, who was sworn in by Mayor Robert Zimmerman with his wife and daughter beside him. Police Chief Darren White read a summary of some of the work the newly-minted  lieutenant has done in the township and beyond.

“Brian Hauss has been involved in just about everything and every place in the township,” said White. “He holds a bachelor’s degree from Fairleigh Dickinson College and has received too many recognitions to count, including being nominated as the Mantua Masonic Lodge’s officer of the year in 2015 and Mantua VFW officer of the year in 2018.

“He has received awards from MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) for the most DWI arrests on four occasions, received two lifesaving awards and has been instrumental in assisting with and solving cases due to his tenacity and knowledge of the town and residents,” the chief added.

Hauss spoke briefly after he was administered his oath.

“I’d like to thank everybody,” he noted. “We’ve got a huge crowd, and for hanging out as long as you did. We, the guys who work in Mantua Township, work in the best town in Gloucester County; we have the best fire department in Gloucester County for sure.

“My dad, of all people, made his calling being a police officer and really made me love this job and made me want to be a cop my whole life,” Hauss recalled. “We just work for such a great place. I mean I love the job and I love Mantua Township, and hopefully I’ll do a good job as lieutenant.”

Crispin was sworn in by Deputy Mayor Pete Scirrotto and accompanied by his wife and three children. White spoke briefly about what Crispin has done for the township since he joined the police department in 2014.

“He has received several letters of praise from individuals with whom he has interacted, as well as several exceptional duty and exemplary performance notices for his activity,” White said. “He also received two commendations, one of which was for saving the life of an elderly woman who was locked in her house while having a medical issue, alongside a young boy who could not open the door.

“Brian Crispin was able to gain entry to allow for medical aid to be performed.”

The committee issues resolutions whenever a new officer joins the force or reaches a new rank or career milestone.

Its next meeting is scheduled for Monday, April 10, at 6 p.m.
