The Burlington County Library invites community members to spend some time during the month of March celebrating the vital role of women in American history.
In 1987, after being petitioned by the National Women’s History Project, Congress passed legislation designating the month of March as Women’s History Month. The celebration grew from a week-long observance authorized by Congress in 1981 and since 1995, U.S. presidents have issued annual Women’s History Month proclamations. Please join the Burlington County Library in recognizing the countless achievements of women in a variety of fields throughout history as it presents a series of special library events all month long.
- The movie “Frida” on March 3 at 6 p.m. – Learn about the life of artist Frida Kahlo, from her humble upbringing to her worldwide fame and controversy that surrounded both her and her husband, Diego Rivera. (Rated R.)
- The movie “Served Like a Girl” on March 9 at 6 p.m. – A group of inspiring and diverse women participate in the Ms. Veteran America competition to overcome the challenges that come with returning to civilian life after serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. (Not rated.)
- “Songs and Arias with Soprano Sungji Kim” on March 11 at 2 p.m. – Praised for “her bright, incisive voice” in the New York Times, Soprano Sungji Kim, accompanied by classical guitarist Stanley Alexandrowicz and pianist Joseph Krupa, performs famous opera arias, 19th century romantic songs and guitar solos.
- The movie “A Ballerina’s Tale” on March 12 at 2 p.m. – This documentary about famous African American ballerina Misty Copeland explores her phenomenal rise, the catastrophic injury that nearly ended her career, and topics of race and body image in the realm of high-class ballet. (Rated G)
- The movie “On the Basis of Sex” on March 18 at 2 p.m. – Watch the inspiring and spirited true story of young lawyer Ruth Bader Ginsburg as she teams with her husband Marty to bring a groundbreaking case before the U.S. Court of Appeals and overturn a century of gender discrimination. (Rated PG-13)
- “Priyanka Shetty: The Elephant in the Room” on March 25 at 2 p.m. – “One-Woman-Wonder” Priyanka Shetty presents a witty, dark comedy show about your typical Indian metalhead and software-engineer-turned-actor who must navigate life as an immigrant in post-Trump America. This event has been generously sponsored by the Friends of the Burlington County Library, Inc.
All Women’s History Month events will be held in the Burlington County Library Auditorium. Registration is not required, but seating will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
