Veterans Day walk/run to benefit legion post

To help raise money for and honor its members, the township’s American Legion Post 452 will host a Veterans Day 5K run/1K walk on Saturday, Nov. 12.

This is our seventh annual Veterans Day 5K Run/1K Walk,” said post adjutant Jack Sommer. “We could not pull this event off without the support from the Harrison Township Committee, Harrison Township police and the Rotary Club of Mullica Hill.

“The race begins and ends at the American Legion Post,” he added. “Our local Harrison Township police will also be out blocking traffic up Colson Road for the loop around William Wilt Soccer Complex. We will kick off the race with a rendition of the national anthem performed by a local singer.”

An awards ceremony will follow the event inside the legion’s hall, where breakfast food will be provided by courtesy of our friends from blueplate restaurant.”

The fee to register for the 5K run portion of the event is $30 for veterans, active military members and children 17 and under, and $35 for civilians. For the 1K walk, the fee is $20 for veterans, active military members and children 17 and under and $25 for civilians.

Funds raised will benefit the post itself, according to Sommers.

“Post 452 has a number of ongoing improvement projects,” he explained. “Our leadership remains committed to investing in the post in an effort to increase membership and expand our outreach to local veterans. Members of the post will be supporting the event and are welcome to participate.”

The post hopes for a turnout at the run and walk of at least 70 participants, its current record.  Awards will go to the winners of each event once the last racer crosses the finish line.

Racers will run or walk from 9 a.m. to noon, with same-day registration at 8 a.m. To register before Nov. 12, go to this link. Deadline is Nov.11 at 5 p.m.
