The 19th* is a nonprofit, nonpartisan newsroom that covers the intersection of women, politics and policy. It takes its name from the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, giving women the right to vote — with an asterisk to note that back then, our democracy often left people of color behind. The 19th* asserts that all issues are women’s issues, “storytelling that represents you, delivered to your inbox”.

An award-winning political journalist focused on issues of race, gender and politics, Errin Haines has worked at the Associated Press, The Washington Post and The Los Angeles Times. An MSNBC Contributor, Haines has also been seen on PBS Newshour, Washington Week in Review and Meet the Press. She taught at both Princeton and Georgetown and landed the first interview with Vice President Kamala Harris after Joe Biden chose her as his running mate.

Errin Haines is working on her first book, which centers on the Black women leading across our democracy and society and what their trailblazing roles in top posts can mean for the country’s imagination around who should wield power.

The event will include reflections from two young women who are Alice Paul Institute Girls Leadership Council scholarship winners. It will also feature Jeannine Cook, owner of Harriett’s Book Shop in Philadelphia and Ida’s Book Shop in Collingswood, both named after civil rights activists. The stores are brick-and-mortar testimonials to African American resistance and resilience. Both have earned rave reviews from delighted customers and stand as spaces for communities to come together to debate and discuss real ideas.

The event will be held via Zoom. Tickets are $19. Proceeds will benefit educational programs on the importance of women’s contributions to all segments of American society. Activities supported by the Fund for the Future include an essay contest for middle and high school students, the Alice Paul Institute’s Girls Leadership Program for girls of all ages as well as the Burlington County League of Women Voters’ Ready to Run Program which encourages high school girls to become involved in the political process.
