Township library’s ‘friends’ raise funds by selling books

Longtime semi-annual sale is the branch’s largest fundraiser

The Friends of Cinnaminson Library will hold its annual book sale on Friday, Oct. 14 and Saturday, Oct. 15 on the lower level of the branch.

Library members will get an exclusive preview that is also open to booksellers on Thursday, Oct. 13, from 6 to 8 p.m.

“Friends of Cinnaminson Library has been doing this book sale for years,” library board member Peggy Shock said. The event now has new leadership, and Friends of the Cinnaminson Library  has about 200 members who pay donations.

The sale includes various book genres available at the library, including children’s titles, fiction, and nonfiction. Each category will be split into separate rooms.

There are approximately 10 to 11 members on the board who help the sale run smoothly. Proceeds help support adult and children’s programs.

“The library gives four free passes to 10 different museums, like the Franklin Institute,” Shock  explained, referring to the Philadelphia science museum. “Funds are also used for speakers and events for children, and to buy new televisions and computers that are different from bigger libraries.”

Board members are informed at regular meetings about what resources the library needs. They are currently working on setting up a Facebook page to keep people up to date about events.

“We want to get more younger people interested in joining the board,” Shock noted. “Many of the members left, moved or retired …  The sale is something fun to do. We’re a new group of three that head it up, and there are five or six people that deal with the book sale.”

The sale is the Friends of Cinnaminson Library’s biggest fundraiser.

“It’s a nice, big sale with a lot of people working there,” Shock said.

Sale hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Cinnaminson branch, 1619 Riverton Road. Hardcover and paperback books will be included, with prices that range from 50 cents to $2, as well as Blu-Ray DVDs. Only cash will be accepted.
