After three years, galleria again celebrates artists

Postponed by COVID, township exhibit returns

The Galleria Deptford will host its first free art show in three years on Sunday to mark the opening of a local artist exhibit that continues through Oct. 31.

“We’re reopening the galleria to get to what it was before the pandemic,” said Sharon Fuller, president of the Gloucester County Art League in Deptford. “Before the pandemic, we used to have all kinds of shows and events. The township has been wonderful to us.

“We’ll spend an hour catching up and viewing all the pieces.”

According to Fuller, the show – sidelined by COVID for three years – will feature more than 100 unique pieces from 30 artists who submitted their own works by framing and getting them ready for hanging. Its coordinator Maureen Peters is a calligrapher from Woodbury who specializes in making art out of everyday words and letters.

“The artists are professionals,” said Fuller. “They’re all local people from Washington Township, Deptford and Swedesboro. Our artists do watercolor paintings, acrylic painting and portraits. We’ll also take photography and 3D objects, like sculptures, as well as jewelry and pastel chalk.”

The show will also include pieces from artists based in Camden County who will present the winner of an art contest for Gloucester County high-school seniors. That artist will be given a scholarship to a college of their choosing and will have his or her submission featured in a student art show next July.

The students also have to inform the committee beforehand what college they want to attend. The winner of the contest will be chosen by the committee.

The Galleria Deptford show will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. at the township municipal building.
