After the retirement of two members, the Mantua Township board of education is seeking new candidates.

According to Board Secretary and Business Office Coordinator Michelle Daminger, one seat’s interim term begins Aug. 22 and goes through Dec. 31.

That seat will then be filled in January 2023 based on the outcome of the previous November’s election. The other vacant seat’s term is Aug. 22 through   Dec.31, 2023.

The board itself represents students in grades pre-K to sixth at three elementary schools, Sewell, Centre City and J Mason Tomlin. It also serves as a “communication link” between the schools and the public. Members oversee the district budget, adopt new policies, hire and evaluate the superintendent and approve the curriculum.

According to Daminger, candidates must be U.S. citizens and residents of Mantua, the latter for at least one year immediately preceding an appointment. They must also be at least 18 and registered to vote in the district. They cannot currently hold the office of mayor or be part of township governance and must undergo a criminal background check.

The deadline to apply for the openings is Thursday. Candidates can send their resumes through the mail to Daminger at 684 Main St. in Sewell, 08080. They can also use email at [email protected]

Interviews are expected to begin Monday at 5 p.m.; times will vary after that, and candidates will be messaged regarding when to appear at the Dr. H. Simmerman Administration Building.

If selected and approved by the board, candidates will then be sworn on Aug. 22, according to a post on the township school district’s Facebook page.
