Burlington County leaders deliver donated supplies to domestic violence shelter

Drive supports nonprofit Catholic Charities Providence House Domestic Violence Services

A spring donation drive organized by the Burlington County Commissioners, New Jersey Senator Troy Singleton and the Burlington County Sheriff’s Department for Catholic Charities Providence House Domestic Violence Services was once again a big success with more than 1,000 items collected for the nonprofit’s shelter and support programs.

Senator Singleton joined Burlington County Commissioners Felicia Hopson and Allison Eckel, and Sheriff Anthony Basantis and Undersheriff Jim Kostoplis at the Catholic Charities Burlington County offices in Westampton on June 10 to deliver the collected supplies. The donations included new clothing, diapers, snack foods, toiletries, paper products, toys, art supplies and other household goods for the Providence House safe house and support programs.

It marked the second year the commissioners, sheriff and senator had teamed up to help collect goods for the nonprofit’s shelter and support services.

“We started this donation drive because we wanted to give Burlington County residents a way to help the victims of domestic violence, and once again our residents responded in a major way,” said Hopson, who is the Commissioners’ liaison to the Department of Human Services. “It really speaks volumes about the Burlington County community, and we know these donations will go a long way to help the survivors of domestic abuse.”

“It’s always great to see our Burlington County communities come together for an important cause, and this supply drive produced an amazing outpouring of generosity,” added Eckel, who is the Board’s liaison to the Department of Public Safety and Prosecutor’s Office. “We know each of these items will be a tremendous help to Providence House and the women and children they shelter and support, so we want to thank all who participated.”

“Domestic violence is a scourge on our society, and I am thankful for organizations like Providence House that work each and every day to help survivors,” said Senator Singleton. “It’s gratifying to see Burlington County residents respond and give so generously to such an important cause. Individuals, families, businesses and groups from across our county helped make this drive a major success for two consecutive years.”

Sheriff Basantis and Undersheriff Kostoplis noted that the Sheriff’s Department is able to regularly deliver supplies donated to its community services unit to the Providence House shelter but that the goods from this drive would ensure they would be well supplied for the remainder of the summer and beyond.

“It’s an awesome thing to be able to see people from across the county rally to help an organization like Providence House and those they serve,” said Kostoplis. “It’s something we’re incredibly proud to be a part of and support.”

Providence House provides comprehensive and confidential services to individuals experiencing or impacted by domestic violence. The organization’s services include a 24-hour hotline, emergency shelter, individual group counseling, advocacy, referrals and programs for children who witness abuse.

Providence House services are available 24/7 by calling the hotline at (877) 871-7551 or (609) 871-7551.
