Tsonis: ‘I’m frustrated’

By ROBERT LINNEHAN | The Haddonfield Sun
Police Chief Rick Tsonis — who made his retirement official two weeks ago and will be off duty at the end of the month — levied several criticisms last week against Borough Director of Public Safety and Commissioner Ed Borden, claiming the commissioner denied him a transition team last year when he made his desire to retire known.
When asked for comment, Borden said he didn’t recall such a conversation with Tsonis a year ago.
Tsonis said he approached Borden last year and told the commissioner he was leaning toward retirement. He requested the formation of a special transition team that he would oversee to help “prepare the department for the multiple changes,” that would occur when he left the position.
“I’m leaving on the 31st of July and the department won’t have a chief of police in place when I’m gone. I’m frustrated, my people are frustrated, and nobody knows what is happening,” Tsonis said.
Borden said he didn’t recall such a conversation with Tsonis a year ago. If such a conversation had taken place, Borden said he certainly would have remembered the request.
