Board considers budget cuts

By ROBERT LINNEHAN | The Haddonfield Sun
Residents may be looking at an increase of about 2.5 percent in the school tax rate — one of several suggestions made by the Board of Education’s finance committee last week to help bridge a possible $1.4 million deficit.
Coupled with the tax increase would be an overall reduction of $616,000 for the 2010–2011 school year, Board member Dennis Kelleher said. Within these reductions is the elimination of one elementary school teacher and a $35,000 reduction in the elementary orchestra program.
Operations would decrease by $115,000, the district would outsource its custodial services for a potential savings of $300,000, eliminate a physical education teacher for $50,000 and budget for a $50,000 savings in energy costs, Kelleher said.
An informal public hearing on the budget will be held on Thursday, March 26 at the HMHS library at 7 p.m. The board cannot hold the formal public hearing until Friday, March 27, which was scheduled for 8 a.m. in the library.
Weinstein said both sessions are open to the public.
