Borough police start search for new full-time officer

Force seeks candidates who ‘put service above self’

MATTHEW SHINKLE//Berlin Borough police have started recruiting for a full-time officer and will establish a list of qualified candidates, a process that starts when a position opens in the 19-member force.

Berlin Borough police have started recruiting for a full-time officer and will establish a list of qualified candidates, a process that starts when a position opens in the 19-member force.

The borough’s officers work in multiple areas, including detectives, K-9 and School Resource Officers (SRO). Sgt. Joshua Smith said the department would welcome a seasoned veteran, but it also encourages younger candidates to apply.

“As in any job, experience is always a positive attribute of a qualified candidate,” he said. “However, our agency does not shy away from candidates who are newer to the profession. Our agency looks for the most qualified candidate that would fit our mission statement and the residents we serve.

“ … Like all agencies, we search for individuals who put service above self and can demonstrate the highest morals and ethics obligations it takes to be a law-enforcement officer.”

Candidates must be Police Training Commission-certified officers or in the process of obtaining that certification. Those capable of obtaining a commission waiver will also be considered, and officers outside of the borough can also apply since there is no residency requirement.

Other requirements include a resume and government-issued photo identification. The borough will accept resumes through the end of this month and until May 11, though formal interviews have yet to begin.

Each day, we receive more interest,” Smith said, “and we encourage those officers who are certified that may be looking to join our team to apply.”

Interested candidates can go to the department’s Facebook post or link to policeapp.com to apply and review minimum qualifications. They can also drop off resumes and applications at the Berlin Borough police station from 8 a.m to 4 p.m daily.
