Students will learn how to cook homemade meals and bake desserts from scratch. All classes will be supervised by resident Chef Katie Sklarow.

The Rec Department has many culinary classes in December for youngsters in grades two through eight. Fledgling chefs will make and take home all kinds of delicious treats like Cornish pasties and holiday cookies to festive gifts like bath bombs and homemade chocolates.

Fans of Harry Potter will enjoy two Hogwarts-themed classes. The first, on Dec. 15, students will make sticky buns and English trifles from scratch. The second, on Dec. 22, a Hogwarts Christmas trifecta will be made featuring butter bear, treacle tarts and Cornish pasties. Both classes will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The ever popular, holiday cookie workshops will be on Dec. 14 and 21 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Scratch-made and custom decorated cookies to take home and share.

In need of gifts? On Dec. 16 there will be a holiday candy making class. Creamy caramels, gummy bears and homemade chocolates will be prepared and packaged for loved ones. “Holiday Gifts Made in the Kitchen” will have kids creating six gift packages filled with sea salt caramels, chocolates and bath bombs.

Spend some of winter break at the Rec’s Community kitchen and whip up some comfort food. There will be two classes on both days of Dec. 28 and 29. For the morning class on Dec. 28 (10 a.m. to 1 p.m.) students will make baked chicken fingers and cheddar biscuits (hone your knife skills). The afternoon class (2 p.m. to 5 p.m.) – “Hot Cocoa and Gingerbread Cupcakes” is the definition of wintertime warmth.

On Dec. 29, the morning class will focus on making the perfect, scratch made brownie, loaded with ice cream, chocolate sauce and whipped cream. The afternoon session will have dinner ready – scratch-made Stromboli, personalized pizza all made with homemade tomato sauce.

Be the host with the most and check out these two New Year’s party classes. On Dec. 30, the morning class will have students leaving with a dessert tray of cream puffs and éclairs. For the afternoon session, a sweet snack tray will be created featuring New Year’s cookies and cinnamon sugar pretzel bites.

All classes will be supervised by resident Chef Katie Sklarow who graduated from the Art Institute of Philadelphia with a Bachelor of Science in Culinary Management. Wegman’s has generously donated pantry items for all culinary programming.
