Youth basketball is back at the Moorestown Rec Center

Clinics begin in October and leagues start in January.

Youth basketball registration for clinics and leagues is now open. Get some quality practice in before the season starts. There are clinics beginning in October for students in grades 1 through 8. Leagues begin in January for the very young through high school.

Clinics are co-ed for grades 1 and 2 and grades 3 through 5. Both are on Wednesdays beginning Oct. 13 through Nov. 17 (five weeks) and will take place at the Church Street Rec Center. Clinics last one hour, the younger group will start at 5:15 p.m. and the older group follows at 6:15 p.m. Tony Dicaro’s “Fundamental Hoops” will provide instruction. Fundamentals of dribbling, proper shooting form, footwork, passing and defense will be taught through fast-paced drills.

Dicaro was a Hall of Fame player at Cherry Hill West and played D1 basketball at St. Joseph’s University, where he reached the NCAA Final Regional team in 1983. He has coached locally for over 20 years and he and his staff are dedicated to helping players improve and developing a passion for the sport.

The co-ed clinic for grades 6 through 8 will meet on Thursdays at 5:45 p.m. starting Oct. 14. There will be 30 minutes of skill development followed by 3 on 3 games to challenge players. Instructor Eric Cassidy has been a physical education teacher for over 13 years and a head basketball varsity coach. Cassidy builds teamwork and sportsmanship.

High school boys’ teams will be drafted during the week of Jan. 10, 2022. Team assignments will be emailed by Jan. 14 with games beginning on Jan. 16 through March 20. Games will be on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Church Street Rec Center. Each team will play at least seven games followed by single elimination playoffs.

Leagues for boys and girls in second grade (separately) will begin Jan. 15 through March 6. They will play at the Upper Elementary School between 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. The format is 30 minutes of skill development followed by a short, referred game. Tony Dicaro and his group will provide instruction.

Leagues for boys and girls will be separated by gender and grades (3-8) into teams that will play on Saturdays beginning Jan. 15. Practices will start the week prior and will be determined by the team coach for weeknight and time. Registration deadline is Dec. 10 and team assignments will be determined by Jan. 7.

Games will be played between 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., depending on the league. League rules ensure equal playing time, and the focus is on participation and fun. Games are refereed.
