Parks and Rec. cooks up spring programming

By Amy Filippone, Dept. of Parks & Recreation

Spring break is around the corner. Looking for something to do? Check out these youth culinary classes and sports programs. All will take place over the break.

There will be two outdoor games and sports-focused programs. There will be a one-day program, “Outdoor Games on the Turf” on Friday, April 2 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Wesley Bishop Turf Fields. This is for first through sixth grade boys and girls who will participate in multiple activities like capture the flag, relay races and other fun games to keep the kids active.

The second outdoor program runs for four days beginning Monday, April 5. This games and sports camp is also for boys and girls in grades one through six and will focus on teamwork with relays and fun “gym class” type activities along with handball and basketball. It will take place at Jeff Young Memorial Field from 9 a.m. to noon. Small groupings will allow children to work directly with mentors and improve techniques and develop athletic skills.

Culinary classes abound this spring break — from Cupcake Wars to sushi making. Classes start with “Pancake-Cake and Biscuit Breakfast Sandwich” on Friday, April 2 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. This class is for fourth through seventh graders, who will learn to make pancakes from scratch that will be layered with yogurt and cream cheese fillings. Biscuits will also be scratch-made and filled with eggs, bacon and cheese. This class should be mandatory preparation for Mother’s and Father’s Days.

“Cupcake Wars Spring Break” will be an in-depth, cupcake extravaganza. For four days beginning Monday, April 5, fourth through ninth graders will prepare for battle. Three days will consist of learning the nuances of batter, piping, and frosting. Classes are from 9 a.m. to noon and the last day will culminate in teams competing with mystery ingredients to claim the title.

There will be two, one-day cooking classes, “Cake Pops” on April 7 from 1 to 4 p.m. and a “Sushi Making Workshop” on April 8 from 1 to 4 p.m. Cake pops will be made from scratch, decorated and readied to take home. In the sushi workshop, kids will learn traditional Japanese techniques and flavor profiles. They can choose the ingredients for their own rolls (all cooked ingredients) — from mango to shrimp tempura and avocado.

Class sizes will be limited, so register early at www.moorestownrec.com.
