Medford residents may get a new trash collection day

Council discusses re-zoning to create more efficient route

Medford residents may need to prepare for a new trash day, according to township council.

Republic Services took over Medford’s trash collection earlier this month and has asked council to consider re-zoning to make its route more efficient, said Township Manager Katherine Burger at a meeting on Feb. 9.

The route would be cut along main roads, meaning some developments would have township waste collection on different days.

“I think it can be beneficial, so I would consider it,” Burger said. “The cost would have to be on them to advertise it and promote it.”

Mayor Chuck Watson agreed, but noted he’d like to see a copy of the proposed route and advertising plan.

“I would like to see the changes,” he said. “They need to do a good job of advertising over a period of time before the change. I’ve lived in my house for over 30 years and trash collection has been on Friday.”

Council plans to vote on the changes at a later meeting.

Also on Feb. 9, council celebrated Capri Mills, a Shawnee High School junior who collected 5,000 books for a Philadelphia school.

“We just honor you so much for all the hard work you’ve done. We really appreciate it,” Watson told Mills before presenting her with a proclamation.

Medford’s neighborhood services professionals were recognized for their work keeping Medford’s streets safe during the influx of winter storms. Watson noted that 2021 is the first year in a while that Medford has seen large amounts of snow.

“I would just like to thank them for the hours that they put in, which is tremendous and a great job,” the mayor said.

Council is prepared to discuss its upcoming budget at meetings on March 9 and 13. Municipal budgets must be introduced to the public before March 31, a deadline that was extended by the state due to COVID. Council expects to introduce a budget plan at its regular meeting on March 16.

The next council meeting, originally scheduled for Feb. 19, was canceled because of a lack of agenda items. Council will now meet on March 2.
