Medford police are participating in the Blue Envelope program to assist people with autism spectrum disorder when they encounter officers during traffic stops.
Autistic drivers can place a copy of their driver’s license, vehicle registration, current insurance card and list of emergency contacts in their Blue Envelope. That process helps them minimize verbal contact with an officer at a time that might be overwhelming due to the sight of a police uniform, simple on-scene questioning or other confusing activity.
The driver provides the envelope when vehicle documents are requested, and there are directions that will guide them and police during an encounter, including how to respond to the phrase, “Keep your hands on the steering wheel until otherwise directed.”
The Blue Envelope also gives autistic drivers the option to indicate whether they are verbal. And its directions help officers when a driver exhibits signs of anxiety due to bright lights and noises, when he or she displays repetitive body movements or if fidgeting and unusual eye contact is involved. Officers are encouraged to speak clearly and allow the driver extra time to respond.
An envelope can be picked up at the Medford police department’s lobby on Union Street, where they are displayed in front of the police services window, or by calling (609) 267-8300. An officer can arrange to home deliver an envelope.
