Cinnaminson scientist earns lifetime award

Thomas F. Murphy, senior scientist for research and development at Hoeganaes Corp. in Cinnaminson, received the Kempton H. Roll Powder Metallurgy (PM) Lifetime Achievement Award from the Metal Powder Industries Federation (MPIF).

Murphy is among the few recognized experts in the field of ferrous PM microscopy throughout the world. He has been instrumental in developing sample preparation, characterization methods and testing for both metal powders and PM components. He continues to perform a vital role in educating the industry about the effects of microstructure on the entire PM process.

More recently, Murphy’s research has expanded to include the effects of microstructure with the additive manufacturing process. He has authored or co-authored more than 75 technical publications, several of which are considered guidebooks to proper sample preparation, etching and analysis techniques. Murphy was also an adjunct faculty member of the Drexel University Evening College for seven years.

The lifetime achievement award is named for Kempton H. Roll, founding executive director of the MPIF.
