Delran STEM fair set at high school

The seventh annual Delran school district STEM fair is set for Monday, May 20, at the township high school.

The fair is organized by students and community partners of the township’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Ecosystem Alliance, which will showcase the Delran Innovation and Fabrication Laboratory; Star Lab, an interactive blow-up planetarium; Tesla Coil demonstrations by Lockheed Martin and other programs.

The goal is to expose the Delran community to the school district’s increasing offerings.

“… The opportunities for all students to move into a career in a STEM field are growing, including our strong connection to higher education and businesses in our area,” said Erica DeMichele, a K-12 supervisor for the school district.

“Students are being exposed early on to the importance of learning new skills, which will move them into great professions once they graduate.”

The fair will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Student and ecosystem partner display tables will include some of the following: K-2 First Lego League Jr. displays, grades three to five and six through eight Lego Education displays, and Green Team Energy Savings interactive displays. The township Green Team will give away native seedlings.

Ten electric vehicles such as the Volt and Bot will be available for exploration and the township will use police and fire trucks – as well as a state-of-the-art leaf machine – to demonstrate technology on the job. New this year is the Universal Technical Institute’s hands-on displays in auto, diesel and welding, robotics and wind-power activities.

Food will be available, as will Ecosystem Alliance plants, reusable grocery bags from Delran Intermediate School’s Green Team and Pawsitivity Sweets from the school district’s 18-to- 21 student program.

Gently used clothing, bedding, toys, knick knacks and small electronics will be collected by the Green Drop donation drive. Old prescription medications will also be collected by the police department.
