In order to bring the holidays to seniors, Deptford will host the winter wonderland in the community center’s gym on Thursday, Dec. 14, from 6 to 8 p.m.
The free event – designed for those 55 and older – will feature Christmas gifts, door prizes, a DJ who will play Christmas music and hold party games and refreshments. It will also include raffle-style door prizes, tickets for which can be purchased as seniors arrive.
An RSVP is required by Friday, Dec. 8, through the parks and recreation department at (856) 845-0804 or by email at [email protected].
This is the township’s third winter wonderland, the result of the inaugural event’s popularity in 2021.
“The first (senior winter wonderland) was a huge success, which is why we’re having this one,” said Mayor Paul Medany. “It’s a fun-filled afternoon. We make up a bag for everyone who comes in and during the event, we’ll give prizes.
“Everyone will get something out of it.”
Previous years saw the community center’s gym decorated with Christmas decor and holiday-themed characters, including Santa himself and Buddy the Elf. Deptford police officers were also in attendance to speak with guests.
This year’s wonderland is expected to draw about 200 to 300 people, according to Medany, and is one of the township’s biggest activities. The mayor, council and administrators are also expected to attend and talk with guests.
“It’s a way to give back to the senior community here in Deptford,” Medany noted. “They get to come out, meet with friends and we get to meet a lot of different people and talk to them.
“It’s great for the community.”
