South Jersey NOW’s Alice Paul chapter will host its monthly meeting online on Wednesday, Oct. 11, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The topic will be challenges to voting for individuals who have been incarcerated.
New Jersey laws prevent those who’ve been incarcerated from voting, as well as those who were on parole or probation, a rule unique to the state. Another difficulty they have in registering to vote is that parole facilities they report to are frequently residential locations.
Many former inmates also have difficulty becoming poll workers, a position frequently in demand to fill.
Annette L. Scott, director of the Re-enter-Register-Voter committee and an active member of the League of Women Voters in Monmouth County, will address the meeting. She frequently visits parole facilities in the state to register citizens and instructs weekly classes for the formerly incarcerated citizens. She also assists women who have been inmates and are reuniting with the children and families.
