‘Fundamentals of the game’: Veteran basketball coach to lead Minutemen

Todd Powers had winning record as head coach at Gloucester Catholic

A former head coach at Gloucester Catholic High School has been named Washington Township High School’s new varsity boys basketball coach.

Todd Powers takes over for Matt Kiser, who stepped away from the program after the 2022-’23 season, according to school officials. Powers – who coached a 10-under travel ball intramural team in the township – spent 14 seasons at Gloucester Catholic, where his overall record with the the Rams was 190-146. Included in that tally were 13 playoff appearances and two Tri-County Conference division titles.

Powers was also a junior varsity and freshman coach at Gloucester Catholic before becoming head coach of the middle-school program at Carusi Middle School in Cherry Hill last year.

“It is with great pleasure that we welcome Todd Powers to our Washington Township school community as the new head coach for boys basketball,” said Director of Athletics Kevin Murphy in a release through Washington Township schools. “Coach Powers is an experienced teacher, school counselor, and varsity head coach with over two decades of experience in our region ..

“Strongly rooted in education-based athletics, coach Powers is committed to developing student athletes in the classroom and on the court.”

Powers’ Gloucester Catholic team reached the New Jersey Parochial South B championship game in 2011. The Rams surpassed the 20-win mark in both 2010 (20-6) and 2015 (22-6), and Powers was named nj.com south coach of the year in 2015. He was a Courier-Post newspaper Coach of the Year finalist in 2010.

“Coach Powers, the 2015 nj.com South Jersey coach of the year, produced championship teams at Gloucester Catholic High School through an emphasis on teaching the fundamentals of the game,” Murphy noted.

“We look forward to watching him coach the Minutemen.”

Powers has been a school counselor since 2014, serving first at Gloucester Catholic then at Cherry Hill West, and an academic advisor at Camden County College since 2010. He once taught social studies at Gloucester Catholic for more than a decade and became department chairperson in 2005.

Powers has a bachelor’s degree in mass communications from Towson University and a master’s in education from Wilmington University.
