Sewell woman charged after fatal crash

A 36-year-old Sewell woman has been charged with vehicular homicide by driving while intoxicated after a motor vehicle crash July 28, according to the Washington Township Police Department.

Police were dispatched to the intersection of County Highway 630 (Egg Harbor Road) and County Highway 639 (Ganttown Road) for a report of a serious motor vehicle crash involving three vehicles at approximately 10:32 p.m., police said.

The preliminary investigation reveals that a 2002 Ford Focus was traveling southbound on Egg Harbor Road, towards its intersection with Ganttown Road, when it made contact with a 2020 Kia Sportage, which was traveling westbound on Ganttown Road. As a result of the momentum from the initial motor vehicle crash, the Kia Sportage subsequently made contact with a 2003 Dodge Grand Caravan, which was traveling eastbound on Ganttown Road, police said.

The driver of the Ford Focus was determined to allegedly be driving while intoxicated and placed under arrest, police said.

The driver of the Kia Sportage – Frank J. Bersani, 56, of Laurel Springs – was transported to Cooper Hospital for medical treatment, where he was pronounced deceased. The driver of the Dodge Grand Caravan was transported to Jefferson Hospital for medical treatment, police said.

The Sewell woman was charged with reckless vehicular homicide, strict liability vehicular homicide by driving while intoxicated and assault by auto. The investigation is ongoing and additional charges are pending.

The intersection of Egg Harbor Road and Ganttown Road was closed for approximately two hours following the crash. The crash remains under investigation. If anyone witnessed the crash or has any info that would aid in the investigation, contact Officer Evan Lick at [email protected] or (856) 256-1212.
