The Harrison Township Recreation Commission and Riverwinds School of Tennis are partnering to host tennis camps for kids this summer at Ella Harris Park.

There will be five sets of sessions for two groups, ages 6 to 10 for beginners and   11 to 15 for intermediates. They will run from Monday through Thursday, with a rain date of Friday, if necessary. Beginners will play from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and intermediates from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

According to the Riverwinds website, camp participants will learn basic tennis techniques like the forehand, backhand, serve and volley. Pros will also teach balance, footwork, sportsmanship and teamwork. Intermediate players will work on stroke production and repetition. Games will be introduced along with a scoring system.

The first set of sessions will run from Monday to Thursday, June 29, and the second from Monday, July 10, to Thursday, July 13. The latter is only a weeklong to accommodate 4th of July activities in the township.

The third group of sessions will begin on Monday, July 17, and end on Thursday, July 27. Session four will be from Monday, July 31, to Thursday, Aug. 10. The last week’s sessions will go from Monday, Aug. 14, to Thursday, Aug. 24. All sessions cost $205 each.

“They have been excellent working with us,” said recreation Coordinator Sharon Chew. “It has worked out perfectly and families love the classes.”

Up until four years ago – when the township’s tennis instructor could no longer teach – the recreation commission led its own tennis classes. To continue them,

According to Chew, the commission reached out to Riverwinds. The partnership is now in its fourth year.

Camp sessions are on a first-come basis, with a maximum of 12 students each session. Participants can register for the classes online but must make an account with Riverwinds.
