Mayor’s Message for week of May 21

Mayor’s Message Volume #8 features the Baldwin Family and Tourette Syndrome Awareness Day which is June 4. On behalf of the township committee, I presented the Baldwin’s with a township proclamation, and we discussed the importance of educating the public about Tourette’s. Look for this video over the next few weeks on our social media platforms and on our township website at mantuatownship.com.

We’re happy to announce that all repairs have been finalized at our community center on E. Mercer Avenue, and the facility reopened as a Gloucester Nutritional Site for county seniors this past Monday, May 22. The township will also be hosting a Senior Dinner for Mantua residents on Tuesday, June 13 at 6 p.m. at this location.

Our police department will join law enforcement from around the country in cracking down on unbuckled motorists and passengers as part of the national Click it or Ticket campaign. This seat belt enforcement and education campaign is slated to be conducted within our community as part of the nationwide mobilization from May 22 through June 4. Expect high visibility seat belt checkpoints and saturation patrols, in combination with local and national publicity efforts, to reiterate the life-saving value of seat belts. Please wear your seatbelt – it’s the law and it saves lives.

This past Saturday, the Mantua Township Historical Commission (MTHC) officially dedicated the Dolores Allen Memorial Library and Research Area at our MTHC Museum. Deputy Mayor Pete Scirrotto and members of the MTHC were in attendance along with the family of Dolores Allen to bestow this honor. MTHC Chairman, Jeff Gellenthin stated the following as part of his formal address on Saturday:

“Dolores Allen was a life-long resident of Barnsboro. She was a member of Barnsboro United Methodist Church and was the church’s historian for many years.  On the 100th and 125th anniversaries of the church she wrote a book commemorating the event.  She also wrote a book about Caroline West VanHelden who painted the picture that hangs in the church, ‘Christ and the Little Children’ on its 100th anniversary.

“She was secretary of the MTHC and a founding member of the Mantua Township Historical Museum. Allen was truly dedicated to her community and to the preservation of our past.  Her work is present here in our library and research area, as she researched and recorded the genealogy and history of many prominent, historic families of the area. She further researched and compiled binders full of records and articles pertaining to long-ago events, landmarks, and moments of Mantua Township.”

Brett Fleming started with us through the Gloucester County Intern Scholarship Program.

Over his three years as an intern and then part-time employee in Mantua, served as an auxiliary helper in construction, economic development, and finance; a land use and zoning assistant; an employee in the administration department working under our township administrator, Jennica Bileci. He was particularly involved in generating marketing materials, grant writing, and website updates; and most recently, a co-coordinator for our digital and social media platforms.

Fleming recently graduated from Rowan University and earned his bachelor’s degree in business management with a minor in marketing. He has accepted a remote sales and marketing position with an engineering and manufacturing company based out of Texas. We wish Fleming much success and happiness with his future endeavors and thank him for being a dedicated member of our team.
