The Fabulous Silver Wings country music band will appear at the Mantua VFW on Sunday June 11, a performance that will raise funds for homeless veterans and increase awareness of suicide in that community.

The band specializes in country music from the 1960s to the 2010s, by the likes of Patsy Cline and Kenny Chesney. The six-member group features lead singer Linda Moore, lead guitarist Joe Dalton, fiddler and rhythm guitarist Gary Olyear, Jack Stanton on pedal steel guitar, Richard Kurts on bass and drummer Jim Moore.

“We’ve each known each other for over 30 years,” said Moore. “We’ve performed in Nashville. This is basically a musical family for me.”

On top of concerts around the region, the band regularly performs to support veterans. Moore got that idea after hearing a startling statistic about homeless vets on a TV show.

“I was watching one of those shows where they build houses, and there was one episode where they helped build a house for homeless veterans,” said Moore, who also performs with the Blondettes, another band that supports vets.

“I heard one of the people on the show saying that there are over 100,000 homeless veterans in the country right now,” she added. “To see and think about those that fought for our country, struggling to keep a roof over their heads, really hit me. I get emotional just thinking about it. That’s what made me want to do shows for veterans.”

The Fabulous Silver Wings show – cover charge is $10 – will begin at 4 p.m. at the VFW’s Capt. Frank J. Culkin Memorial Pavillion, which opened last year and is named after the post’s late quartermaster.

“The pavilion’s name pays special tribute to Frank, for his love, service and dedication to the Lawson Cox VFW Post 7679,” the Mantua VFW website says.
