Why it pays to shop in the township this month

Voorhees promotion still offers dividends for taxpayers

To celebrate May’s designation as Small Business Month, Voorhees has a new opportunity for new and old Shop Voorhees! program users in conjunction with Eastern High School.

The 10-year-old township program – offered to shoppers and small businesses – will offer members of the business community a 60-second promotional video produced by Eastern students they can post to their social-media sites to encourage enrollment in Shop Voorhees!

The program enables homeowners to direct a portion of purchasing dollars spent on goods and services in Voorhees to be applied to their property tax bills. The promotion has already been successful in other cities in North Jersey; Voorhees was the first South Jersey municipality to offer it.

Stella Sytnik, township Community and Business Development chair, said township representatives felt the month of May was a good time to again highlight Shop Voorhees! and encourage residents to think locally when they shop.

“Essentially, the more you shop in Voorhees the more you save,” she added.

Rather than the physical card that has long verified enrollment in the program,   the township has shifted to a digital QR code that residents can carry on their smartphones.

“Any resident of Voorhees can participate by downloading the property tax app for their iPhone or Android,” Sytnik advised. “You can also register at propertytax.com.”

Eastern Superintendent Robert Cloutier and technology department teacher Jeff Holmes have helped organize Shop Voorhees! The latter recently presented the first promotional video made by students – for Wayback Burgers in Voorhees – at the board of education meeting last month.

“The students are working really hard and we have a lot (of students) pursuing film and video work at the college level,” Holmes said.
