Mabel Kay Senior Center to offer 2022 Memoir Program

Seniors interested in participating should be available on Oct. 19, Nov. 2 and Nov. 16 for interviews.

Mabel Kay Senior Center is very excited to announce the return of its Memoir Project. The pilot program last year was a resounding success and was even featured on NBC10 News.

Haddonfield Seniors will have the opportunity to document their own life story (with a little help from some friends). Intergenerational programming is a priority at Mabel Kay – such a great way for teens to learn from seniors and seniors to learn from teens.

Mabel Kay will once again be collaborating with Mrs. Holly Maeise’s 9th grade English classes from Haddonfield Memorial High School to write the memoirs. The students will meet with the seniors over the course of the semester, interview them, get to know their life story, write it up, and hand them a finished product for them to keep or to hand down to their family.

It’s a great opportunity for the senior population to teach teenagers about moments in history, experiences during wartime, and what life was like before modern technologies like smart phones and the internet were invented.  The high schoolers will have their moment to teach seniors a few things as well – social media, a TikTok dance – and maybe form a bond with the older generation (many of last year’s pairings stayed in touch and traded cards over various holidays).

Mabel Kay will also have a professional photographer, Amanda Hall Studios, volunteering her time to take photos for the final product.

Session 1: Oct. 19, Nov. 2, Nov. 16 from 12:20 to 1 p.m.

Session 2: Oct. 19, Nov. 2, Nov. 16 from 1:40 to 2:30 p.m.

To reply, please email or call Sheri Siegel (email is preferable if you have it) at [email protected]  or (856) 354-8789.  Please only register if you know you can make all three dates (out of fairness to other seniors and out of fairness to our 9th graders who are getting graded on this project).

The program will take place at Mabel Kay Senior Center, 24 Walnut Street, Haddonfield
