EASTSIDE (formerly Woodrow Wilson)
This is a season of change for the Tigers and not just their name. In late June Brandon Bather resigned as head coach, not the best of times to replace a football coach. Former Wilson great Melik Brown, has been named the new coach. Wilson should continue to be a force, but the key will be replacing prolific QB Devin Kargman, now at Kent State, along with several other veterans. This will be a relatively young team. It may take time for this young team to jell, but by the postseason, this should be a formidable group. Wilson, which competed in the WJFL Memorial the last two seasons, went 9-3 and won the Central Jersey Group 3 title last year . While there are key players (and a head coach) to replace, Wilson should remain a contender in the Liberty and also in Group 3. There is no shortage of Division I talent led by Jr. WR-DB Willy Love (6-3, 200), considered among the best safeties in the country. Another highly recruited player is Jr. TE-DE Fatim Diggs (6-3, 220) Sr. OL-DL Shamir Boyd (6-2, 300) just received an offer from Monmouth. Other key veterans include . Jr. WR-DB Julius Dominguez (5-10, 160), Jr. Nickel/S Terron Lloyd, (6-2, 175), Jr. CB Marshall Washington (6-2, 175), Jr. WR Yasir Matthews (5-7, 165) and Jr. WR-DB Judah Anthony (5-10, 160). The new QB will be So. Mahki Brunson. (5-9, 165).
BURLINGTON TOWNSHIP
The Falcons are the defending division champs and the division is expected to be even more competitive, especially with the addition of Eastside. Burlington Township has lost 18 of 22 starters, so the Falcons should remain competitive but not the favorite. The offensive line should be a strong unit, with three returning starters, So. OL Xavier Wimberly (6-2, 250), Sr. OL Jeremiah Floyd (5-9 230) and Sr. OL Chris Savage (6-0. 210). Wimberly was a second-team all-conference choice. Also returning as a starter is Sr. SS David Schley (5-11 200) who had 68 tackles and 6 TFL. Among returning letter winners, Sr. RB Naquan Jones (6-1, 200) rushed for 126 yards (5.7 avg.) and 1 TD. Jr. DL Anthony Mose Crump (6-2, 240) had 18 tackles. Sr. DB DeAndre Simmons (5-9, 175) recorded 23 tackles and Sr. DB Nasir Harris (6-1, 175) had nine tackles. Among newcomers, So. Baron Davis (6-1, 170) is expected to be the starting QB. Two other newcomers to watch are Fr. FB Dom Carter (5-8, 180) and Fr. DB Isiah N’Diaye (6-0, 180).
WILLINGBORO
It was quite a season for Willingboro, going 8-4, sharing the WJFL Colonial Division title with Haddonfield and Delran and advancing to the SJ Group 2 championship before losing 32-8 to Point Pleasant Boro. Now the Chimeras move to the Liberty, where the competition is arguably more challenging. The Chimeras have to replace seven graduating seniors who were first-team all-conference and while this won’t be a rebuilding season, they won’t be expected to contend for the division. There are no returning two-way starters, but plenty of players who saw action on at least one side of the ball. Jr. OL Derrick Swain (6-0, 255) was a second-team all-conference choice. Other returning veterans include Jr. OL Nick Scruggs (5-10, 190), Jr. OL Julian Williams (6-0, 225), So. TE Jordan Richardson Wright (6-2, 230), Sr. WR Khamaad Rice (6-2, 175), Sr. WR-RB Jayson Harris (5-11, 175), So. DL Jaelen Johnson (5-9, 240), Sr. LB Derek Fryer (5-10, 185), Jr. DB Jarelle Taylor (5-7, 150), Jr. DB Jackson Murry (5-7, 150), Sr. DL Darian Rashad (6-1, 210) and Sr. LB Karim Massir (5-10, 190), who is expected to be the defensive leader. The QB job is expected to be contested between So. Sean Taylor and Fr. Lamar Best. A big impact newcomer is Jr. RB Derrick Bryant (5-10, 185), who is a transfer from Audubon. Last season he rushed for 635 yards (5.9 avg.) and 9 Tds for Audubon.
DELRAN
Frank Holmes, who had a successful coaching stint at Holy Cross has returned to the head coaching ranks at Delran. The Bears went 6-3 last season and earned a share of the WJFL Colonial title. They also made the CJ Group 3 playoffs, losing a 34-28 OT first round game to Burlington Township. Patience may be needed as the Bears were hit hard by graduation or transfer. Jr. OL-DL Kenny Jones (6-5, 280) and Sr. QB-DB Derek Namnun (6-0, 200) were both second-team all-conference choices, Jones on D and Namnun on offense. Namnun completed 56.6 % of his passes for 817 yards and 9 touchdowns. In addition, Namnun is an outstanding student and will be a third-year starter at QB. Jones had 29 tackles, 9 TFL and 2 sacks. At the beginning of July he had received offers from Rutgers and Connecticut. Sr. OL-DL Anthony Scotto (6-0, 250) was a second-team choice on offense. Jr. RB-LB Jimmy Rush (5-11 195) was honorable mention all-conference. He had 35 tackles and 3 TFL A key returning letter winner is Jr. RB-DL Manny Nolasco (5-9, 235), who contributed 9 tackles and 2 TFL. Newcomers to watch include Fr. OL-DL Jake Namnun (6-2, 270), So. WR-DB Ezra Thomas (6-1, 160) and Jr. OL-LB Colin Moore (6-1, 210).
