First Presbyterian Church of Moorestown welcomes the community to attend Fire Pit Fridays, an event designed to build friendships and bring people together.
“Our governing board here at the church is called our ‘session’ and it’s comprised of persons from the church who are also called elders,” said Pastor Stuart Spencer. “The idea for Fire Pit Fridays came out of a conversation that our session had earlier this year, and the conversation was about our experience with COVID.”
Spencer, First Prebysterian Church of Moorestown’s Associate Pastor Rev. Wes Allen, members of the session and others focused on creating safe events for the community.
“I think one of the things that was really top on the list for us was the need to try to regather people in person as we could, realizing that COVID is still here,” Spencer said. “One of the things we’ve learned throughout, as many people have, is that you’re much safer outside than you are inside, especially early on…We have a lot of great, usable and beautiful space here.”
As part of his Eagle Scout project, Lumberton resident Evan Livingston designed and oversaw the building of the fire pit. All are welcome to attend every Friday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Seating is available but people can also bring their own lawn chair. No registration is required.
“It was underway when we were having this conversation about our future and someone with awareness of the fire pit said, ‘What if we had a fire pit going on Fridays and just come if you want too, we have seating there, we’ll provide the marshmallows and sticks, just come and enjoy the company of other people from the church and from our community’,” Spencer said.
Spencer looks forward to seeing people attend in-person events post COVID where members of the community can relax and meet new people.
He also noted the upcoming Strawberry Festival hosted by the church in June of this year. It was the first time the event was being held since the pandemic began.
“The church has been hosting strawberry festivals here for more than 60 years…we offered strawberries and ice cream and cake for people to enjoy…it was a beautiful evening…it was everything that we wanted it to be.”
The First Presbyterian Church of Moorestown wants the community to know that its doors are open to anyone and that they hope their events can bring people together.
“We are here not for ourselves, but we’re here for our community and for our region and we really believe that,” Spencer said. “We are here to offer whatever help and support we can, and just as a place of welcome.”
