Burlington County unveils U.S. flag retirement box

Flags can be disposed in county’s administration building

Special to The Sun: Burlington County Commissioner Allison Eckel unveils the new U.S. flag retirement box at the county’s administration building.

The Burlington County Commissioners celebrated Flag Day, June 14, in a special way – unveiling a new United States flag retirement box.

The official flag retirement box is located on the first floor of the Burlington County Administration Building at 49 Rancocas Road, Mount Holly, and offers a safe and convenient method for residents to properly dispose of U.S. flags that are no longer in suitable condition to be displayed.

“The American flag is a symbol of our country and it also has come to represent the service and sacrifice of those who have defended our nation, and our rights and freedoms. It deserves to be treated with the utmost dignity and respect,” said Burlington County Commissioner Allison Eckel. “The retirement box offers an easily accessible location where residents can bring faded or damaged flags and know they will be properly disposed of in an appropriate manner.”

U.S. flags should never be discarded in garbage or recycling. Those that need to be retired should be destroyed in an honorable way. The retirement box offers an easy method to ensure that occurs.

“We plan to partner with local veterans, VFW and American Legion posts and scouts to make sure that every flag left in the retirement box is either repaired or disposed of respectfully,” Eckel said.
