The Indian Mills Historical Society (IMHS) will hold its biannual Atsion Day flea market at the Burlington County lake on May 7.
The historical society was organized in 1973 as a nonprofit. Indian Mills is often used to identify Shamong Township, but the name joins that of other areas as early settlements in the township: Atsion, Dellet, Flyatt, Smalls, Dingletown and Willow Grove.
Atsion Day celebrates the Shamong Township community next to the lake and is held on the first Saturdays of May and October. It typically draws between 750 and 1,000 people.
Vendors do not need to register ahead of time, but can book early online on the nonprofits website. The historical society encourages the vendors to arrive between 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. to obtain a space. Each space is $25 and $40 for a double space with money collected after 10 a.m. the day of the event. Separate donations are also welcomed the day of the event to go toward the historical society.
The event usually draws about 50 to 60 vendors from across New Jersey and Pennsylvania who must bring their own tables, chairs and displays. A concession stand will be run by Indian Mills Boy Scout Troop 47 to raise money for their yearly activities.
Proceeds raised help the historical society continue its dedication to the education, history and preservation of historical structures and culturally significant areas in and around Indian Mills.
“So this way, we generate money for purchasing historical artifacts,” said Joseph Reinhart, president of the historical society. “In fact, we just purchased an old building which we intend to use as our meeting house for not only ourselves, but also the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.”
Reinhart noted that the building is actually an old farmhouse on Oakshade Road in the township where the society will display artifacts.
The Atsion Flea Market’s hours are 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with a rain date of May 8. For more information, visit imhs2019.com
