Gloucester County Commissioner Dan Christy resigns

Director DiMarco reflects on his community impact

Special to The Sun: After serving three terms in Gloucester County, Commissioner Dan Christy resigned on Jan. 26 after receiving a promotion with the Carpenter’s International Union.

After three terms in Gloucester County, Commissioner Dan Christy has resigned, a move that came after his recent promotion and increase in responsibilities at the Carpenter’s International Union.

“Commissioner Christy, recognizing that this would prohibit him from continuing the level of service the taxpayers need and deserve, has nobly tendered his resignation,” Commissioner Director Frank DiMarco announced at the governing body’s Jan. 26 meeting.

Most notably, Christy supported veterans services as a liaison to the Office of Veterans Affairs, where he helped organize events that included the Wreaths of Remembrance ceremonies at the county veterans cemetery each December.

“This is a way for some families to include their relatives in their holiday festivities and keep them in their hearts; for others, it is a way to honor a veteran for their service and sacrifice,” Christy said at the Dec. 4 ceremony.

He was also a liaison to the Department of Emergency Response and EMS during a sensitive era in the county.

“He oversaw many additions of municipal EMS systems into the Gloucester County EMS and the successful management of emergencies like the 2015 straight-line winds, COVID-19 pandemic and vaccinations and the 2021 F3 tornado,” DiMarco said.

Another role Christy held was liaison for the Gloucester County Animal Shelter, where took the lead in passing the Trap, Neuter, and Return (TNR) resolution. The initiative allows for free-roaming cats already living outdoors to be humanely trapped, evaluated, vaccinated and sterilized before release. He also helped
establish the donor wall and the Animal Control Office/Triage facility.

Since 2005, Christy has been a senior council representative for the Northeast Regional Council of Carpenters in South Jersey. During his time as commissioner, he was employed as a business representative for the union and his recent promotion to eastern district representative for the International United Brotherhood of Carpenters led to his resignation.

A replacement for Christy at the veterans office has not been chosen. All inquiries can be referred by email to Veterans Affairs Director Robert Jones at [email protected] or by visiting https://www.gloucestercountynj.gov/267/Veterans-Affairs.
