Seneca High School is accepting applications for its automotive program, an initiative designed to blend work experience with a robust student curriculum and create partnerships with auto dealers to train technicians in the industry.
While offered only at Seneca, the ASE Automotive Program is open to current or rising Lenape Regional High School District students from Evesham, Medford, Medford Lakes, Shamong, Tabernacle, Southampton, Mt. Laurel and Woodland. It provides junior and seniors with work experience at a local auto business and leads to an entry-level Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification.
The idea came during a strategic planning process in the 2018-’19 school year. Seneca heard ideas and recommendations from the community, students, parents and administrators about hands-on learning opportunities and job experiences that could be part of the school’s course offerings, according to Assistant Principal Sean Cassel.
Because of COVID concerns, the automotive program’s introduction was delayed until the 2020-’21 school year. Its first cohort of Seneca students took shape in the fall, according to Cassel.
“Students will benefit from the sequential courses which are designed specifically for the Automotive Career Pathway students at Seneca High School,” Cassel explained. “Partnerships between local businesses and automotive dealerships will be promoted and internship opportunities for upperclassmen students will be established. Students will be able to get hands-on experience outside of the classroom in an industry that is in need of automotive technicians,”
