Voorhees district begins construction on new kindergarten addition

Project scheduled to be completed by September 2022

EMILY LIU/The Sun: On Wednesday, July 28, Voorhees Public School’s board of education members, staff, Mayor Michael MIgnogna, Chief Louis Bordi, and LAN associates gather at Kresson Elementary School to celebrate the beginning of the new kindergarten addition’s construction. The project is set to be completed in September 2022.

On Wednesday, June 28, the Voorhees Township Public Schools held a groundbreaking ceremony to commemorate the beginning of construction for the new kindergarten addition at Kresson Elementary School. The $4.5 million project is set to be completed by September 2022 and includes the addition of 10 new classrooms as well as the renovation of five of the existing classrooms at Kresson for a total of 15 classrooms for the kindergarten program. The project also includes the creation of a courtyard, an entrance lobby that doubles as a learning space and a new playground area. It will be led by LAN associates and DUALL Restoration Inc.

EMILY LIU/The Sun: LAN Associates provide a picture of what the changes at Kresson will look like in September 2022. The goal is to have the building ready to welcome the centralized kindergarten program for the next school year in 2022.

Acting superintendent Michael Redfearn gave the opening remarks.

“We are excited to be here this afternoon to break ground on the kindergarten addition here at Kresson school,” said Redfearn. “We are pleased to bring full-day kindergarten to our community September of 2021, and we look forward to the opening of our new kindergarten center 2022.

“We would like to thank the entire community and the board of education who took the vision of full day kindergarten and turned it into a reality.”

Redfearn was followed by Kresson Elementary School’s principal, Stacey Morris.

“This addition represents the opportunity to share the same initial welcoming experience with so many more, literally hundreds more, students and their families,” Morris shared. “On behalf of our Kresson staff, we can not be more excited about being part of the journey for all of the students in the district as they enter into their first phase of their elementary experience.”

Starting in the fall of 2022, all kindergarteners will be at Kresson elementary school to attend kindergarten. According to Susan Donnelly, Supervisor of Special Projects, the elementary schools are currently at their capacity, so centralizing the kindergarten program will help balance the other schools. Assistant superintendent Diane Young noted that the district serves around 310 kindergarteners and has 16 classrooms across the district–only one more than there will be next year.
