Obituary: Constance T. Hughes

Connie was an active member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Church and taught CCD for years.

Constance T. Hughes, age 92, went peacefully to her Lord on Dec. 31. Our beautiful mom was giving, kind, had a tremendous sense of humor and a strong faith. She will be missed by all who loved and knew her.

Connie was born in Edgewater to Daniel G. Dilger and Mary (Casey) Dilger. She married the late Charles J. Hughes, the love of her life on January 22, 1950. They were married for 58 years. Connie and Charlie raised 11 children: Chuck (Helen Muskett), the late Chris (Shobha Pasqualone), Neal (Betsy Looney), Mary (Brent Barbehenn), Jackie (Rob Bent), Dan (Beth Begos), Patti (Rob Cooper), Barbara (Dan Murnane), Stephanie (Mark Ford), Peter (Anne Marie Fitzsimmons) and Geraldine (Dave Link). She had 28 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. She is survived by her sister Ethel Scamporino. She was predeceased by her brother Daniel G. Dilger, Jr., her sisters June M. Dayock and Dorothy Menist and her grandchild, Kira Barbehenn.

She and Charlie moved to Moorestown in the early 1950s. Connie was an active member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Church and taught CCD for years. Connie enjoyed the fellowship of Moorestown’s Churchwomen United and participating in the Moorestown Garden Club. She played pinochle with friends, was an avid reader, especially of biographies and loved classic films. Connie loved to play tennis and cherished her time competing with her girlfriends. She also managed the travel to and from New York City for several of her children who acted in television commercials.

Connie and Charlie travelled up and down the East Coast for decades after Charlie took up sailboat racing in 1965 and later spent summers in Newport, Rhode Island, where Connie was first mate aboard their sailboat “Mist.” They cruised the waters of Rhode Island and Massachusetts, bringing extended family and friends along, making many friends wherever they went. Connie and Charlie loved to travel together to see the world. They lived in Kwajalein, Marshall Islands for four years in the eighties and travelled to Canada, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and Ireland. Connie lived life to the fullest.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the funeral mass was for immediate family only. It was live streamed on the Our Lady of Good Counsel website. The burial was private in Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Moorestown. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Connie’s honor may be made to Catholic Charities: https://www.catholiccharitiesusa.org/ways-to-give
