Gloucester County ranks tops in recycling rates

Gloucester County had the second highest recycling rate of all 21 counties in the state for 2017.

Gloucester County Freeholder Director Robert M. Damminger announced that Gloucester County had the second highest recycling rate of all 21 counties in the state for 2017.

The NJ DEP recycle rates listed Gloucester County with a 52 percebt municipal solid waste (MSW) recycling rate and a total recycling rate of 61 percent.  MSW recycled includes all paper and beverage containers, anti-freeze, lead acid (auto) batteries, tires, motor oil, brush, grass, leaves, consumer electronics, food waste, dry cell batteries, other glass, other plastic and textiles when they are generated by a non-industrial generator.

Damminger said that the state has mandated a 50 percent MSW rate and 60 percent total rate.

“Recycling reduces the amount of waste sent to our landfills, conserves our natural resources and reduces pollution. Gloucester County offers residents very convenient recycling options which results in a cleaner environment for everyone,” stated Freeholder Director Damminger.

Damminger said, “Our county recycling program works closely with the municipal coordinators to encourage residential recycling and to educate our residents about the latest rules for recycling and that teamwork is one of the keys to our success.”
