The Delran Township Board of Education held its monthly meeting at Delran Middle School Monday, honoring the district high school’s First United Soccer Team and STEAM Up Summer camp volunteers. The board also spotlighted various grants the district has received as well as some personnel changes.
The meeting started with Supervisor of Health and Physical Education Anthony Guidotti and Valerie Bowers, supervisor of Special Education, honoring the soccer team for its participation. The team consisted of Ryan Barreto, Rebecca Biluck, Mason Bodary, Shelby Holzinger, McKenzie Marshall, Henrique Oliveira, Dane Sabarese, Shubh Singh, Makayla Smith, Brooke Wachter and Tyler Woodington. The team was coached by Brian Croly and Karen Schmidt.
The second group of students honored were summer volunteers at the Delran STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) Up, coordinated by Delran STEAM Coordinators Erica DeMichele and Mary Jo Hutchinson.
Students who attended the camp between grades seven to 12 went on field trips, developed culinary arts skills and participated in engineering activities demonstrating the process of food. The students were able to see the development of food from growth to cooking to waste and recycling, while understanding STEAM and the role humans play in it.
The group consisted of Temesgen Armstrong, Alex Beck, Carly Brzozowski, Elijah Carey, Hannah Cascio, Aylin Ceylan, Alexander Christie, Lily Clervil. Kendal Coldren, Jason Croly, Sydney Croly.Lizzie DeSimone, Natalya DeVaux, Maddie Duffield, Claire Duncovich, Alexander Essig, Claire Flynn, Maggie Flynn, Taylor Hamlin, Brooke and Dalton Hennegan and Haadi Khan.
The volunteers also included Colin Kremus, Sera Lukens, Justin Ma, Michale Martin, Andrew Menson, Emma Mullin, Rachel Nehila, Abby Olear, Jordan Onyango, Jack Pappas, Shreya Parikh, Adrianna Puleo, Morgan Rafanello, Syncere Ray, Alexandra Rocco, Zhane Scott, Isabelly Silva, McKenna Sloan, Dominic and Oliva Sorrentino, Kaitlyn Stewart, Abigail and Grant Stiglich, Julia Stricker, Jeetkaran Sudan, Taylor Thompson, Brooke Wachter, Nina Wimmer, Simge Yilmaz, Aleyna Yucel, Maria and Erika Heffernen, Bruce Kirby and Riley Reynolds.
After the student presentations, the board conducted its normal meeting. While many of the resolutions approved were based on routine business, Superintendent Brian Brotschul also spotlighted a number of grants the Delran Township School district received from the Delran Education Foundation.
According to Brotschul, the Millbridge Elementary School received a grant in the amount of $3,950 for a Sensory Path project. The Delran Intermediate School received a grant in the amount of $350 for a Yoga for the Mind program called Zentangle.
The Delran Middle School received several grants from the education foundation. The first was $1,100 for a community-based instruction project. The second grant for $300 will go toward a project called Picture It; the third grant of $2,500 is for a program called Girls Who Code. The Delran High School received a grant worth $1,500 for its Diversity Club.
“We are deeply appreciative of all the work that the Delran Education Foundation does,” said Brotschul. “Every nickel comes back to the classroom, so it’s always great to have support from the community. The teachers found out on the first day of school and it was a great thing from the foundation.”
