On Monday, Oct. 28, over 30 people agreed to the motto “Start a conversation, not a fight” and came to the Mt. Laurel Library for a Better Angels debate on second amendment rights and gun violence. Better Angels is a nation-wide citizen organization whose goal is to help depolarize America and help folks find ways to hold civil conversations about politics, even when we disagree.
People of all walks of life, including gun owners, teachers, retired military, high school students, retirees, law enforcement, members of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense and others spoke passionately and civilly about gun violence in our country and debated whether or not changing gun laws could decrease or stop mass shootings. Participants said that they found common ground with people they normally would disagree with, and that the format of the debate enabled them to listen and learn from others’ experiences and to share their own opinions in a civil and respectful way.
