Palmyra Council spotlights community events at latest meeting

On Monday, Sept. 16, the Palmyra Council discussed various resolutions, spotlighted events in the community and reminded residents of all of the events happening in Palmyra over the next few weeks.

At its Monday, Sept. 16 meeting, Palmyra Council spotlighted events in the community and reminded residents of all of the events happening in Palmyra over the next few weeks.

Community spotlights included the dedication of Chief Payton I Flournoy Sr. Park. Flournoy was the first African American chief ever to be appointed in Palmyra and in Burlington County. He is also universally believed to be the first African American chief of police in the country. He served Palmyra from 1959 to 1976 before retiring.

Prior to the official ceremony on Sept. 7, the borough decided to rename Grove Park as it underwent reconstruction due to receipt of a grant.

After discussing the newly refurbished park, Palmyra also highlighted the town-wide yard sale, Bread of Life block party and the pancake breakfast at Sacred Heart Church. The council also mentioned the Strides Against Sepsis Walk at Legion Field and the Independence Fire Company’s Craft Beer Fest.

Strides Against Sepsis Walk is a fundraiser that will be held Sept. 28 at 8:30 a.m at Legion Field in Palmyra. This will be the first annual Sepsis Awareness Walk. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m.

According to the Strides Against Sepsis website, sepsis is the body’s toxic and overwhelming response to an infection that can lead to life-changing results. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Sepsis Alliance to help provide support to the millions of individuals affected by sepsis each year. On Oct. 5, the Independence Fire Company of Palmyra will be holding its first annual Craft Beer Festival between 1 and 5 p.m at the Palmyra fire house located at 115 W Broad St. The event will feature cold beer, hot food and live music. Prices will be $20 per person, which includes a cup and three drink tickets.

Council also appointed Danielle Lippincott as tax search officer for the borough and Helen Dixon as a substitute crossing guard effective immediately

The council then authorized a contract to Axon Enterprise, Inc. in the amount of $19,811.70 for equipment for the police department. The council also authorized the borough to become a member of the Burlington County Coastal Communities Coalition.

Next, the council authorized a contract to Advanced Electronic Design in the amount of $25,648.75 for five Patrol PC Rhino Tab in-car computers.

As the meeting came to a close, council finished off with two resolutions. The first authorized the mayor to apply and complete required documents to the county for Municipal Park Development Program funds.

The last resolution resolution authorized the Land Use Board to undertake a preliminary investigation as to whether the property known as block 80 lot 6 is an area in need of redevelopment in accordance with the procedures of the Local Redevelopment and Housing Law.

The next council meeting will be held Oct. 21 between 7 and 10:30 p.m. at the Palmyra Borough Hall Courtroom.
