BSA Troop 20 does a “Good Turn” by “Leaving No Trace”

On Saturday, June 8, the Boy Scouts of Troop 20 demonstrated both the principles of “Leave No Trace” with their motto “Do a Good Turn Daily.” By volunteering their morning to cleanup trash along four miles of Jackson Road in Medford, the boys performed a good deed (AKA a “good turn”) and helped the environment.

Troop 20 performs this cleanup about three times every year. In addition to bottles, cans and other small trash, they often find large items dumped along the side of the road, like oil barrels, cabinets and couches.

Every Scout on the clean up received a pair of gloves, a trash bag and a trash grabber. The Scouts would then get down to work and keep a steady pace in front of a trash truck in which they could dispose of the litter they found. Some Scouts even had the chance to operate the trash truck’s compacting mechanism.

This year’s driver was named Joseph Parentlo. When asked how to rate Troop 20’s efforts on the Jackson Road clean up, he responded, “Fantastic. Wish people would stop dumping trash. (This) helps the environment and community.”

Troop 20 has fun meetings and events, but when they get to work, they do it well. The cleanup is just one of many things Troop 20 does for the community. They celebrated their successful “good turn” with a couple dozen doughnuts!
