Greater South Jersey Chorus to perform in Cherry Hill this May

Performances of 'Out of Darkness' will take place on May 4 and 5 at Christ Our Light Church.

This spring, the Greater South Jersey Chorus presents “Out of Darkness,” a multi-choir concert that promises to restore hope and lift spirits. Performances will take place on May 4 at 8 p.m. and May 5 at 3 p.m. at Christ Our Light Church in Cherry Hill.

Forty members of the Keystone State Boychoir and New Jersey Boychoir will join the 90 members of GSJC to pay tribute to our shared humanity and the reawakening of the earth after a long winter. The show features sweeping multi-movement works with live instrumental accompaniment. One of these pieces is Dan Forrest’s “Requiem for the Living.” While a requiem is typically a prayer of rest for the deceased, Forrest’s five-movement work is just as much for the living, highlighting our quest for peace in a world of turmoil. Also featured is John Rutter’s acclaimed “Mass of the Children.”

GSJC’s Artistic Director Christopher Thomas regularly seeks opportunities for the chorus to partner with other musical organizations, and he is especially enthusiastic about this collaboration. “I have so much respect for the Keystone State Boychoir, the New Jersey Boychoir, and their director, Steven Fisher,” Thomas said. “Such energy and heart are encapsulated within a nurturing community. The groups let these boys find their voices and push their boundaries, and even mentor each other in the process. It’s an honor for the Greater South Jersey Chorus to make music alongside them.”

The artistic director of the New Jersey Boychoir and Keystone State Boychoir, Steven Fisher, said “This is an exciting opportunity particularly for the New Jersey Boychoir; the chance to sing a major work for choir and orchestra with GSJC. For a fledgling ensemble, transformative music-making opportunities are vital for growth. And this will be a family affair. Lauren Loo, GSJC member and soprano soloist for ‘Mass of the Children,’ is the mother of Cyrus and Knight Loo, founding members of NJB.”

“Making music with my family is one of my favorite things,” said Lauren Loo. “I feel extremely fortunate to be able to combine my passion for music and pride in my children into one special event. I’ve been looking forward to it all year!”

In addition to showcasing area musicians from multiple choirs, this concert also highlights a local composer, Frank Staneck of Rutgers University. GSJC will perform the world premiere of Staneck’s Willow, with lyrics adapted from Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night.”

Tickets for the show are $20 and may be purchased at the door or online at greatersouthjerseychorus.org.
