The Environmental Commission and Green Team of Harrison Township are grateful for how community residents “kicked off” the holiday season.
This was the second year the team reached out to Harrison Township residents asking individuals to consider donating used shoes, but still have many miles to go. The group is happy to announce that twice as many shoes (46 bags) filled the donation bins in 2018!
Thank you to everyone who brought shoes to the multiple drop-off locations, including Harrison Township and Pleasant Valley Elementary Schools, Clearview High School as well as the township’s Municipal Building.
“We were grateful the local schools welcomed the opportunity to participate,” said the Environmental Commission’s Chair, Mike Gonserkevis. “As a group, we believe it is important to include children in our town’s environmental and philanthropic efforts. The superintendent, principal, and office administration were extremely supportive. The schools even took additional steps to communicate that the drive was happening, which undoubtedly played a role in the increased donations this year.”
The Environmental Commission’s goal was to support those in need, while simultaneously reducing items headed to the landfill. The donations will remain in the South Jersey region. The charity group, Friends of Fairview Give Back, will distribute the shoes to a few organizations in need including the Ronald McDonald House and the Home of the Brave in Camden.
