Burlington County residents are invited to learn about preventing any potential lead poisoning in their homes.

The Burlington County Health Department will be hosting three events this week for the public to coincide with Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, which runs from Oct. 21 through Oct. 27.

County residents are invited come out for educational materials and see the county’s life-size interactive exhibit.

All events will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. this week at local libraries.

The county will be at the Evesham Library on Tuesday, Oct. 23, the Pemberton Branch Library on Wednesday, Oct. 24 and finally at the Riverton Library on Thursday, Oct. 25.

According to the county health department, individuals can be exposed to lead through the following ways:

-Imported consumer products such as cosmetics, spices, cultural
home remedies, pottery, and toys

-Take-home lead from hobbies and occupations

-Water pumped through leaded pipes

-Contaminated soil and air

Children are exposed to lead by swallowing or inhaling it, with the county health department noting that lead affecting a child’s brain and nervous system can result in lowered intelligence, hyperactivity, attention deficits, developmental problems and decreased hearing.

To prevent my child's exposure to lead, the county health department recommends the following tips:

– Wash a child’s hands frequently before eating, after playing
outside or on the floor and before sleeping.

-Wash toys, bottles, pacifiers and other objects that children
handle and put in their mouths

-Leave shoes at the entrance to one’s home.

-Keep achild away from bare soil.
