The seminar will address recent changes to the criminal justice system
The Burlington Vicinage will hold a Criminal Justice Reform information session on Thursday, Oct. 11 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Temple Sinai Synagogue, 2101 New Albany Road, Cinnaminson.
The seminar, organized by the vicinage’s Advisory Committee on Minority Concerns and the Burlington County League of Women Voters, will address changes to the criminal justice system that went into effect on Jan. 1, 2017. The new system relies on a risk-based system that bases pretrial release decisions on an examination of objective factors.
The program will also address the roles of the court, prosecutor and public defender; the impact of risk assessments on pretrial decisions and an explanation of the speedy trial rule.
The Minority Concerns Committee, which develops programs to ensure equal access, fairness, and impartiality, includes Superior Court employees and community representatives.
The session is free and open to the public. Individual cases will not be discussed.
