Health Department can now test items for lead to help prevent poisoning

Press release from Gloucester County Board of Freeholders

Gloucester County Freeholder Director Robert M. Damminger and Freeholder Jim Jefferson announced today that the Gloucester County Health Department has received a grant from the New Jersey Department of Health for the identification of lead in homes for the prevention of childhood lead poisoning.

Damminger said, “This grant provided the county with the opportunity to purchase two new pieces of equipment that will assist us in identifying the presence of lead in painted surfaces and household items and provide us with more efficient means to keep children and other residents safe and healthy in their own homes.”

Jefferson said, “We now have the ability to test various items in our homes such as toys, makeup, spices and dishware for traces of lead with a new consumer product lead analyzer, which provides instant results. This new product will help to further ensure the health and safety of those wishing to have their household items scanned.”

This consumer products lead screening service will be offered on Wednesdays from 3 to 4 p.m. throughout the month of October, which is National Lead Poisoning Prevention Month.

To be tested, household items should be brought to the Gloucester County Health Department at 204 East Holly Avenue, Sewell.

For any questions call the Health Department at (856) 218–4170.
