The Historical Society of Moorestown’s will host “‘Jungle of Weeds’ to War: Fort Monmouth and World War I” on Aug. 8 at 7 p.m. at Smith-Cadbury Mansion located at 12 High Street in Moorestown.
The United States had a very short time to prepare itself for World War I, and one symbol of that rapid preparation was Fort Monmouth, which went from a “jungle of weeds” to war readiness in a matter of months. Melissa Ziobro, professor of public history at Monmouth University and the last command historian at Fort Monmouth before its closure, will explain the role Fort Monmouth played in advancing United States’ communications and technology during World War I. She will also touch upon some of the other military bases in New Jersey that were in service during the war.
