Weekly Roundup: Fair Funding Formula, Township adopts budget, book club celebration

Catch up on what happened this week in Tabernacle.

School funding concerns arise due to the Fair Funding Formula

Birnbohm discussed that there was a recently passed legislation regarding school funding called the Fair Funding Formula. A decision has not been made yet by Gov. Murphy on whether to sign or veto it.

Certain schools are being labeled as overfunded, including the LRHSD and six of the eight sending districts.

Currently, $4,342 per pupil is provided in state aid to the LRHSD, and if the legislation is approved, funding could be reduced to $3,100 per pupil.

It was also stated that 22 of 541 school districts receive more than half of the $8 billion given in state aid, while the other 519 districts have to share the remaining funds.

Tabernacle Township adopts budget after months of discussion

A municipal budget was adopted at last week’s committee meeting, resulting in no tax increase for Tabernacle residents.

After months of discussion, the budget allows the municipal tax rate to stay at 42.2 cents per $100 of assessed property valuation.

The final budget showed reductions of $40,000 from the capital improvement fund, $10,000 from workers compensation insurance due to Tabernacle Rescue Squad’s offer to pay for its insurance coverage, $5,000 from garbage and trash removal, $10,000 from public buildings and grounds, $6,000 from fire department expenses and $23,000 from aid to volunteer ambulance companies.

There will be an additional $10,000 kept in unanticipated expenses in the event the squad needed extra funds at the year’s close.

The 100th book club celebration was held on June 26

Members of the Ashley Crossing Book Club celebrated their 100th book discussion on June 26. The club, which uses the Burlington County Library System’s Borrow-a-Book Club, includes about a dozen residents of the Ashley Crossing 55+ Active Adult Community in Delran and has been meeting since 2010.

The BCLS Borrow-a-Book Club service provides groups with canvas bags containing multiple copies of a single book, along with helpful aids for organizing and running successful book discussions.
