The Teen Café Reboot and MooreWalks are hot topics at the department.

Join the Department of Parks and Recreation on Friday, June 22 from 7 to 10 p.m. for the next installment of 3rd Floor Teen Cafe. Sam Scheibe and Gwen Wilkie, two Moorestown High School alumni, started Teen Café in 2015. Their vision was to create a platform for high school students to perform short musical acts in a casual, yet professional atmosphere. This is a free event and has had audiences from 75 to 150 people.
Teen Cafe lineups range in size of groups and musical selection. There have been eight-piece jazz bands, solo performers, duets and small groups performing anything from original compositions to songs from musicals to works by Bob Dylan, Beyonce, Stevie Nicks, Coldplay and Bruce Springsteen. The student organizers set up the space to make it club-like and also get food and beverages donated for the event.
So come see these talented young adults — current seniors before they go off to new ventures and welcome back returning alumni. The founding members, Sam Scheibe and Gwen Wilke will be back and performing. New performers are always welcome, so please contact Rich Corbin at [email protected] for more information.
Teen Café is sponsored by the Moorestown Recreation Department, information about all programing can be found at www.moorestownrec.com.
In other news at the Department of Parks and Recreation, it’s been nearly two months since MooreWalk began it’s first group walk. It’s developed quickly and now offers regular, organized walks Monday through Fridays. Some leave from the Recreation Center and others at designated locations, like Maple Dawson Park. There are morning and evening walks that are roughly an hour and cover approximately two to three miles. Walks are free with water, snacks and maps provided. Walk details can be provided via email and found on the Department of Parks & Recreation’s Facebook page www.facebook.com/moorestownrec/.
Guided walks have also begun and focus on a particular area of interest in Moorestown. Coming up on Monday, June 25, Mark Pensiero, will be leading a hiking and bird-watching walk at 8:30 a.m. at Water Works Woods (meet at the corner of Kings Highway and Haines Drive at the Water Works Woods sign). Pensiero will lead this hike at a leisurely pace while revealing the wonders of this 19-acre preserved space just west of Strawbridge Lake. Nestled in the woods amongst plush foliage are the remnants of the old Moorestown community swimming pool and outdoor hearths. Pensiero is an avid birder so bring binoculars and learn whose behind all that chirping in the morning. We recommend hike-appropriate shoes and tick protection.
On Wednesday, June 27, Chet Dawson, will be leading a walk along the banks of Strawbridge Lake. This 103 acre park was appointed as a Works Progress Administration project during the Great Depression. This hike will be at a leisurely pace to stop and discuss historical facts. The walking events are free, but we do appreciate registration in advance at www.moorestownrec.com.
We’re always looking for walk guides so if you’d like to lead a walk, please contact Cyndi Britton at [email protected].
