Evesham Township School District hosts 24th annual ‘Eyes on Art’ show

Artwork from the district’s elementary and middle school students will be on display through May 31.

The Evesham Township School District’s annual “Eyes on Art” show certainly lived up to its name this week when hundreds of district families and members of the public poured into the show’s opening night gala to see what creative pieces students had crafted this year.

This year marks the district’s 24th annual show, which once again features paintings, sculptures and other work from the district’s elementary and middle school students displayed side-by-side at Evesham Township Municipal Complex for all members of the public to view.

According to the district, the tradition of intermixing art work of all ages serves two purposes: first, the display encourages visitors to view the entire show rather than simply a few selective pieces, and two, the display allows visitors to see similar themes but from completely different viewpoints.

Similar to previous year’s, this year’s show once again kicked off by looking back to the past, with an opening ceremony where superintendent John Scavelli Jr. and various art teachers returned the artwork of select students from last year’s show.

As is tradition, each year officials select several pieces from the show that are framed by the Evesham Education Foundation, where those pieces then continue to be displayed in the municipal building and ETSD administration building until the next year’s show.

“We took artwork from last year, a lot of it was hung throughout the buildings in the township throughout the course of the year, and I really appreciated it in my office in the year. I always miss it being taking away,” Scavelli said.

As with past shows, the art in this year’s show was also categorized by themes, such as animals, people, design, still life, fantasy, multicultural pieces and nature/landscapes.

For those who are trying to find a specific child’s artwork, each piece of art is adorned with brightly colored name tags to mark different schools in the district.

In addition, looking glass display boards at the exhibit are also available with all the school’s cards arranged by color. According to officials, using the boards and guide maps available at the event should make it easier for visitors to find specific pieces.

This year’s ETSD “Eyes on Art” show will run through May 31. Exhibit hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays, except on the show’s final day of May 31, at which time the exhibit will close at 3 p.m.

“During the evening or day people can come in and see things more,” Scavelli said.
